Pelican Preserve is the result of Audubon International’s partnership with WCI Communities Inc. (WCI), a leading builder of residential communities. Working hand-in-hand since May 2001, WCI and Audubon International continue to drive change in the homebuilding industry, encouraging the adoption of green building principles and the importance of building sustainable developments.
One of the first communities to receive certification by Audubon International as a Gold Signature Sustainable Development, this 1,200-acre master-planned development was designed with the intent that residents and nature co-exist in harmony. A boardwalk and more than two miles of nature trails careen through a 38-acre cypress wetland preserve showcasing many of Florida’s native plants and habitats. The 55-plus adult community boasts Florida’s highest-rated energy efficient homes, and features built-in watershed protection measures to preserve the lush landscaping and natural areas.
With $30 million budgeted for recreational activities, Pelican Preserve features a 27-hole Chip Powell-designed championship golf course with an aquatic driving range and putting green.
With certification as an Audubon International Signature Cooperative Sanctuary, Pelican Preserve Golf Club, formerly known as the Solona Golf Club, also offers a glimpse of Florida nature. A natural resource management plan was developed to guide construction of the course, and will continue to guide its operation and management in the years to come. One of the primary goals of the plan is to minimize disturbance of wildlife and ecosystems, as well as protect water quality and quantity.
In addition to championship golf, the Pelican Preserve community offers an exhilarating lifestyle and unique amenities. These amenities include the Plaza Del Sol town center and Soleil Health & Fitness, a 12,000-square-foot facility complete with spa and elevated walking track overlooking an indoor lap pool. There is also an art studio with ceramics and wood working shop, a Cyber Café with gourmet coffee bar and Internet access, and Destinations Restaurant.
RWA supplied the multidisciplinary resources for the design, permitting, and construction of this mixed-use residential community. Project work included planning, land surveying, and site engineering design for land development of this golf course community consisting of 2,500 low- and mid-rise condominiums, attached villas and single-family homes aimed at empty-nesters and retirees.
Project work along Colonial Boulevard and Six-Mile Cypress included off-site improvements, permitting and utility coordination, and jack and bore relocations for utility access. RWA also handled the design, permitting, and construction services for a 1.25-mile, four-lane divided urban roadway and the large diameter potable water, sanitary sewer, and effluent water transmission mains to support the development.
RWA successfully won public and private regulatory agency approval for all required permits and completed the backbone infrastructure as projected.
